LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy Near Arlington, VA

Affirming, in-person therapy for gay men and other members of the LGBTQ+ community. If you’re navigating identity, sexuality, anxiety, depression, or trauma, I’m here to support you.

I’m Dr. Wayne Bullock, a licensed clinical psychologist who provides in-person therapy for adults and couples throughout the DMV, including clients who live and work in Arlington, VA. As a gay therapist specializing in human sexuality, I offer a candid, compassionate place to explore your life without assumptions about who you are or who you should become.

My office is located in downtown Washington, DC, and is accessible by metro. If you live or work in Arlington and want thoughtful therapy with a psychologist who understands, let’s connect.

Therapy for Arlington’s LGBTQ+ Community

From the outside, your life in Arlington may look full and successful. You might have built a career, developed a busy social life, and found a community where you can express parts of yourself more openly. Inside, though, you may still feel anxious, disconnected, or uncertain about yourself or your life.

Perhaps you have come out but still struggle to feel fully seen. Maybe sex has become stressful rather than connecting. Maybe you’re navigating an open relationship. Or perhaps you’re questioning your identity and self-worth. You do not have to minimize these concerns simply because other areas of your life are going well.

LGBTQ+ affirming therapy gives you a place to explore your whole life: identity, relationships, work, family, body image, sexuality, and ambitions. You are welcome whether you are out, questioning, selectively open, exploring, or simply seeking an inclusive, accepting therapist.

Sex and Sexuality Therapy Near Arlington, VA

Sex and sexuality can be complex to navigate. Sex therapy offers a confidential, nonjudgmental place to discuss concerns that may feel too private or uncomfortable to address elsewhere.

You don’t need to know what the issue is before coming to therapy. You may simply know that something is not how you’d like it to be. As a licensed psychologist with a Master of Education in Human Sexuality, I’m here to support you in overcoming sexual challenges and having a fulfilling sex life.

I support individuals and couples in Arlington and throughout the DMV who are experiencing sexual anxiety, changes in desire or arousal, shame and jealousy, or who want to explore their sexual identity. I’m kink-positive and support both monogamous and non-monogamous relationships. I’m not here to decide what your sex life should look like.

I help you understand yourself and your desires while keeping things grounded in consent, communication, and sexual safety.

Common Concerns I Help Gay Men & LGBTQ+ Adults Address

There is no right way to be gay or to be a man. Even so, many gay men and adults in the LGBTQ+ community grow up surrounded by messages about gender, desirability, relationships, sex, success, and belonging. Those expectations can become difficult to separate from your own values and desires.

In my therapy sessions, I help gay men and others in the LGBTQ+ community (both individually or as a couple) with concerns like:

  • Coming out or deciding when and how to disclose your identity

  • Internalized homophobia and shame

  • Dating and relationship difficulties

  • Loneliness or disconnection from the gay community

  • Body image, appearance pressure, and acceptance with aging

  • Masculinity and gender expectations

  • Performance anxiety at work

  • Sexual anxiety or performance concerns

  • Jealousy, trust, boundaries, and unmet needs

  • Religious trauma or family rejection

  • Emotional, physical, or sexual trauma

  • Chronic anxiety, depression, and low self-worth

As a gay psychologist, I bring both specialized clinical training and lived experience to my work. You don’t need to feel pressure to explain or justify yourself. You don’t need a specific label or an identity-related concern to benefit from working with an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist. We can explore anything that feels safe, honest, and sustainable for you.

Other Concerns I Help My Arlington Clients Address

Beyond LGBTQ-Affirming and sex therapy, I work with adults and couples across a wide range of emotional and relational concerns:

  • Anxiety Therapy: Anxiety affects our lives in all sorts of ways. For professionals in Arlington and the larger DC region, high-functioning anxiety can be particularly difficult to recognize. I help you understand what your anxiety is protecting you from and develop a more flexible relationship with it.

  • Depression Therapy: Depression does not always prevent you from working or meeting responsibilities. You may continue going through the motions while feeling increasingly disconnected inside. Therapy offers room to explore the emotional, relational, and historical patterns that may be contributing to your depression.

  • Trauma Therapy: If you’re carrying trauma from past rejection, abuse, or discrimination, it can shape your beliefs and actions throughout your life. Therapy helps you process those experiences and overcome their influence over you.

  • Loneliness and Belonging: Arlington’s active social spaces can make loneliness feel especially confusing. Therapy can help you explore what makes belonging difficult and help you begin to develop the connections you want.

  • Identity and Life Transitions: Are changes in career, relationships, health, or age leaving you questioning the life you have built? Goals that once motivated you may no longer fit. Therapy offers a place to explore goals that align with who you are now.

How often will we meet?

I generally meet with individual clients at least once a week for 45-minute sessions. Couples therapy sessions may differ in length.
