Clinical Consultations

Guidance for Licensed Therapists

Sometimes you just need another clinician to talk it through with.

You feel stuck with a patient. You’re questioning your approach. You understand the theory, but you’re not quite sure how to translate it into the room with a particular patient.

Clinical consultation gives you a space to bring those questions to someone with experience and think through the work together.

I’m Dr. Wayne Bullock, a clinical psychologist and clinical supervisor offering in-person clinical consultations for licensed therapists.

Bring the Questions You’re Sitting With

You don't have to arrive with a perfectly defined problem. Maybe you're wondering:

  • Why does this treatment feel like it isn't moving forward?

  • What am I missing in my work with this patient?

  • How might I understand this person from a relational perspective?

  • How do I work more analytically without feeling like I'm following a script?

  • What might be happening between my patient and me?

  • How could I approach a difficult clinical moment differently?

  • Am I responding to my patient in a way that is actually helping?

  • What is it about this patient that makes me respond in a way that I find unfamiliar or different than with other patients?

You might bring one specific treatment or clinical question. Or you might want to use consultation to think more broadly about your clinical style and development across several therapies. We'll focus on what is most useful to you.

A Second Perspective Can Change the Work

Clinical work can be isolating. Even with strong training and experience, there are moments when you're too close to a dynamic or theme to see something clearly. Another experienced clinician can offer a perspective you hadn't considered or help you trust an instinct you weren't sure about.

I'll ask questions, offer observations, and draw on my clinical experience to help you consider what may be happening in the treatment.

You remain the clinician making decisions about your work with your patient.

Develop Your Psychoanalytic Thinking

My primary clinical approach is psychoanalytic, deeply informed by the interpersonal and relational tradition at the William Alanson White Institute.

For therapists interested in working more analytically, consultation can help bridge the gap between understanding the concepts and knowing how to work this way with an actual patient.

We can explore what you're noticing, what may be happening between you and your patient, how your own responses might be informing the treatment, and what other ways of understanding the case might be available.

The goal isn't to give you a formula. It's to help you develop your own clinical thinking and confidence.

In-Person Clinical Consultation From An Expert

I've been practicing since 2009 and have pursued extensive training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. My experience includes:

  • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology

  • Master's degree in Human Sexuality

  • Two years of intensive post-doctoral interpersonal psychoanalytic training in New York

  • Clinical Supervisor

  • Facilitator of Clinical Case Conferences and an Interpersonal Psychoanalytic Reading Group

  • Former Director of Training at Therapy Group of DC

  • Former Steering Committee Member and Faculty member at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis

I've spent years not only doing clinical work, but helping other clinicians think about theirs. Consultations take place in-person in the downtown Washington, D.C. area. Sessions can be focused on a specific patient, a particular clinical question, or broader questions about your approach and development as a therapist.

Good clinical work doesn't mean having every answer. Sometimes it means knowing when another perspective could help.
