Couples Therapy in Washington, DC
You know what you're fighting about. But do you understand why you keep ending up in the same place?
I’m Dr. Wayne Bullock, a psychologist providing in-person couples therapy in Washington, DC, and the surrounding DC Metro Area.
My approach is psychoanalytic, interpersonal, and relational. That means we don't just focus on changing the argument. We get curious about the relationship pattern underneath it, and how each of you contributes to it.
Therapy For Couples Who Want to Understand, Not Just A Quick Fix
You may already know what you want your partner to change.
But meaningful change often starts with understanding your own place in the dynamic.
I work with couples who are willing to become curious about their relationship and their contributions to it, including couples who are:
-
Stuck in recurring arguments they can't seem to resolve
-
Carrying resentment or hurt that has built over time
-
Trying to rebuild their relationship after infidelity
-
Feeling disconnected emotionally or physically
-
Navigating differences around sex, intimacy, or desire
-
Considering opening their relationship sexually or romantically
-
Unsure why their interactions keep leaving both partners frustrated
You don't have to agree about what the problem is to begin. You do need to be willing to look at what's happening between you.
How Therapy Helps Couples Feel Supported
My primary approach is psychoanalytic, informed by interpersonal and relational therapy. I'm interested in the questions underneath the obvious ones:
-
Why does this particular issue matter so much?
-
What happens for you when your partner responds that way?
-
What are you hoping your choice will accomplish?
-
And how did you come to believe that choice would get you there?
This kind of work can reveal something you may not have seen on your own: the intentions behind your behavior don't always match its impact.
I believe couples therapy should feel supportive, but it shouldn't simply make you feel comfortable. I'll work to understand both of your perspectives with empathy and without taking sides. At the same time, I'll challenge you when there's something worth looking at more closely.
I'll offer observations. I'll ask difficult questions. I'll intervene when I think it may help.
But I won't tell you what your relationship should look like. Whether you're trying to repair your relationship, rethink it, or understand it more clearly, you get to decide where the work leads.
