Living fully as your authentic self shouldn’t feel like a lonely road.
And yet, for many LGBTQ+ and gay individuals, the path toward well-being can be lined with systemic barriers, social disconnection, or a lack of affirming spaces. Therapy offers one way to heal and grow—but it’s not the only one.
Whether you’re seeking connection, community, or resources outside the therapy room, Washington, DC is home to several organizations doing vital work for LGBTQ+ health and wellness.
I’ve compiled a list of local groups and spaces that support social and emotional wellness for LGBTQ+ individuals including gay men. While this list is not exhaustive, these four organizations can offer a broader sense of care and belonging to support you in living your best, most authentic life.
Good for: Building community, finding peer support, and staying connected
The DC LGBTQ+ Community Center is a cornerstone of support in the District. Their peer-led support groups are inclusive and affirming, addressing a wide range of needs—from aging to gender identity to recovery. They also offer a food pantry and clothing to those in need.
2. SMYAL
Good for: LGBTQ+ youth ages 13–24, leadership development, housing services
SMYAL offers leadership programs, housing support, and a brave space to explore identity and empowerment. Their work is particularly meaningful for those navigating the challenges of coming out, school dynamics, or unsupportive home environments.
Good for: Holistic health support, HIV prevention, inclusive primary care
While Whitman-Walker is well-known for their medical services, they also offer community-focused wellness programs, educational workshops, and HIV/STI prevention. Their affirming care model creates an inclusive healthcare experience that honors each person’s full identity.
Good for: LGBTQ+ seniors, community events, intergenerational connection
Offered by the DC Department of Aging and Community Living, Out & About is a program designed specifically for LGBTQ+ older adults. From cultural outings to wellness programs, it provides meaningful ways to connect and thrive later in life.
Because Healing Happens in Many Ways
Community, safety, and identity-affirming spaces are essential to feeling whole. While these are just four of the many resources available to LGBTQ+ individuals in the DC area, another piece of the wellness puzzle is therapy.
As a therapist specializing in LGBTQ+ mental health and therapy for gay men in DC, I know that your wellness journey may take many shapes. If you're looking for therapy alongside other forms of support, I’d be honored to be a part of that path.
